Part of our team is in Gladstone, Missouri to install Joe Norman’s “Monarch Girl” at Oak Grove Park, where the city’s Theatre in the Park is annually held. Below you can watch a time-lapse of the installation (courtesy Holly Hayden of The Time Collector LLC) and a 360 view of the placement (courtesy Joe Norman) Inspired by a photo of his daughter during a camping trip several years ago, Joe states, “That photo reminds me of the importance of what we pass on to the next generation.
I combined that image with the Monarch Butterfly because it is an example of interdependence. I believe that is a critical value to teach our descendants and also one that allows Monarchs to migrate through North America. I have yet to see one fly in anything resembling a straight line, yet somehow they move through habitat for thousands of miles taking several generations to complete. But, it is not a one-way relationship: we depend on them as well to pollinate plants and farmland along the way." -Joe Norman, National Sculptors' Guild

Our artist, Joe Norman may have too much time on his hands. Here's a video he's shared showing the effects of Stay-At-Home on artists who have studios and tools locked up in shared work spaces. Don't worry, we're checking in on him regularly.
#ConeOfShame #ArtistsAtHome #StayAtHome #SaveALife #JoeNorman #CreativesDuringCovidCrisis #FamilyTime #SillyVideo What happens when you have an engineer/artist dad (Joe Norman), a bright young girl and a 3D printer to make prototypes during a stay-in-place order? Construct a icosahedron fort! What an awesome homeschool project!! We've got our eyes on Abby, she's going places already. Also, I want a play day in that fort! From Joe: "Attached are some photos of me and Abby learning about icosahedrons and building her new fort in the backyard, after prototyping it with 3D printed sockets we designed that fit Q-tips as structural members. We then used 2x4's and door hinges to make the full size version." In geometry, an icosahedron is a polyhedron with 20 faces. The name comes from Ancient Greek εἴκοσι, meaning 'twenty', and ἕδρα, meaning 'seat'. There are infinitely many non-similar shapes of icosahedra, some of them being more symmetrical than others. We already knew how amazing our artist Joe Norman is, but now the world is getting a bigger glimpse of his generous spirit. He has been creating 3D printed ppe and ventilator parts to maximize the use of a ventilator for multiple patients at hospitals with limited equipment and resources. "Several weeks ago, I was working on four large public art placements in three different states in the western US. Since then, I and the various public art agencies have decided to put those projects on hold so they could focus (rightly) on the health of their communities. And, to be honest, there are more important things in my life right now than making sculpture. Specifically, there are thousands upon thousands of people dying scared and alone, isolated from their loved ones in hospitals across the country. I simply can't justify working on my own art when I have the ability to do something about that. Anyone interested in helping can visit make4covid.co and makersunite.co for more information." - Joe Norman #DoingYourPart #Covid19 #VentilatorManifolds #MakersUnite #Make4Covid #JoeNorman |
