Wayne Salge Behind the Scenes

2/20/2024

We had the great pleasure of visiting with Patsy and Wayne Salge and seeing what Wayne’s been working on at the studio. We were first greeted by an enlargement of Tobin, this version is a solid 3ft high cat that we can’t wait to see in bronze. That’s Alfred supervising the sculpt. He also has some fun new paintings and a 12ft Emil (horse and rider) in the works... plus a few small pieces that will be fun to share later. It’s always a pleasure seeing what the artists are doing. If you see something you can’t live without, dm us or check the store, we will be adding new paintings soon, and once cast, some of these other characters Wayne is crafting. click here https://www.jk-designs-inc.com/store/c24/Wayne_Salge.html #NationalSculptorsGuild #WayneSalge #StudioVisit #NSG #FeedYourCreativeSpirit #ConnectingPeopleWithArt #ArtistDriven #ClientMinded #CollectArtItsGoodForYou

Stone Pony Now and Then

Denny Haskew's Stone Pony Now and Then
We just received a note from the family that purchased Denny Haskew's contribution to Santa Fe's Trail of Painted Ponies- "The Stone Pony". We're happy it's still being loved and admired.

Originally placed at the family's home in Houston, Tx, "Trigger" they shared a photo with a young rider about 15-years ago; and now, photographed headed to it's new home and placed on Willie Nelson's 500 acre "Luck Ranch" in Spicewood, TX where the family now lives. Trigger overlooks panoramic views of Hill Country and greets anyone who drives up the hill, including Willie, wife Annie, and their 70+ rescued horses at Luck Ranch.

Trigger the Stone Pony joins another Trigger at Luck Ranch, Willie's 50+ year old guitar… named after Roy Rogers' horse. Because Roy said he never left home without Trigger… Willie never leaves home without his guitar, so he decided years ago to affectionately name his guitar “Trigger”.

“THE STONE PONY: All of life combines in this wonder called the Universe… This ’stone pony’ is a small attempt to show that a piece of stone and a horse are both living energies of this universal home.” -Denny Haskew

New Office Spaces

6/20/2023

June has been full of coordinating the move out of Columbine Gallery and the Sculpture Garden, we're happy to share that JK Designs' made the move to home offices and we are excited about our renewed focus on our large-scale projects with the National Sculptors' Guild members artwork. So far, our dog's are the happiest about the move.
Picture
Alyson's office is already in use and Jujube is super happy with her new bed in the office.

Picture
We were all pleasantly pleased to see the Executive Desk Set fit into John's space. We'll update with a new pic of all the office accoutrements. It sets the tone for some great site designs and public art master planning to take place.

Happy Holidays

12/23/2022

We hope you are gathering with your favorite people, honoring traditions and/or celebrating in your own way. Regardless of the path you're on, there are so many reasons to commemorate this week. Enjoy.

We'll be closed until next Wednesday to be with our families. You can still shop online, so grab a hot cocoa and find your next artwork to warm your space.

Merry Solstice, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa!

Art finding homes

2/16/2022

We're so pleased that people are finding homes for our artwork, we've had a record number of sales for winter which is usually pretty slow for us. We rarely have historic works, but a collector brought this landscape to us to sell and the Alexis Compera, circa 1906, just found a new wall to hang on. We love art appreciators! Thanks for making art a priority in your lives. Living With Art: Boerne, TX

One of our patrons sent us these beautiful images from their sculpture garden. Did you know John frequently designs floral elements in our placements? Gardening is one of his passions. And landscaping can be just as expressive as the art showcased in it. These cactus in Boerne, Texas are displaying their amazing colors, and it is breath taking. Share the simple beauty that is surrounding you these days, sometimes it's art, sometimes it's nature's sculptures. Hopefully you have a little of each enhancing your space. #LivingWithArt #CollectorsCorner #EyeCandy #FloweringCactus #SculptureGarden #LandscapeDesign

What happens when you have an engineer/artist dad (Joe Norman), a bright young girl and a 3D printer to make prototypes during a stay-in-place order? Construct a icosahedron fort! What an awesome homeschool project!! We've got our eyes on Abby, she's going places already. From Joe: Icosahedron Fort by Abby and Joe Norman

We've got our eyes on Abby, she's going places already. Also, I want a play day in that fort!

From Joe: "Attached are some photos of me and Abby learning about icosahedrons and building her new fort in the backyard, after prototyping it with 3D printed sockets we designed that fit Q-tips as structural members. We then used 2x4's and door hinges to make the full size version."

In geometry, an icosahedron is a polyhedron with 20 faces. The name comes from Ancient Greek εἴκοσι, meaning 'twenty', and ἕδρα, meaning 'seat'. There are infinitely many non-similar shapes of icosahedra, some of them being more symmetrical than others.

Oil painting by JEAN PERRY available at Columbine Gallery Colorado's Largest Fine Art Source Specialists in Public Art and Home Decor
My painting style has evolved thru the years from creating large abstract collages using acrylics and tissue paper to a more traditional style today that could be described as a form of Impressionism. The change began some thirty years ago when I discovered the excitement of painting outside on location. Today I am primarily a plein air painter traveling all over the world with my portable easel and paints in my backpack. I work mainly in oil and when traveling I paint on surfaces of linen that has been glued to Baltic birch wooden panels or Styrofoam boards. When painting a landscape en plein air you are limited to the number of hours you can work before the moving sun has created an entirely different picture so I carry small panels in sizes from 8”x10” to the largest size, 16”x20”. Actually, I think that this constraint of time helps me to concentrate on the impression of the scene and not get too involved with the details and hopefully the painting will have some of the emotion that I felt when I was standing there. These paintings are usually close to being a finished painting, but if not, I will work on them in the studio before releasing them to a gallery. In my studio I also use these small pieces as reference for larger paintings on stretched linen canvas, sometimes combining the information from more than one field study. I also paint still lifes and portraits from life and believe all painting is learning to “see”.
Jean started art classes at age 5 when her mother sent her to Saturday lessons at the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Mo. Majoring in Fine Arts at the University of Colorado, she began painting in an abstract, nonobjective style. Signing up for a local plein air workshop taught by Mel Fillerup of Wyoming she discovered the joys of painting on location. ‘We painted every day even in a spring snow storm and I knew I had found my direction’. Since that time Jean has continued her art education with classes at the Scottsdale Artists School, workshops with many instructors including private lessons with Mark Daily in Denver. Her style of painting has evolved from abstract to a more traditional form of Impressionism working mainly in oil. Jean has painted and traveled all over the world including Indonesia, Europe and Mexico. She teaches workshops every year with several different organizations. The most prestigious oil painting organizations in America have voted her a signature member including the Plein Air Painters of America, Oil Painters of America, Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and an honorary member of the Tucson Plein Air Painters Society. Her paintings can be found in shows from New York to California including the Arts for the Parks Top 100, The Salmagundi Club in New York City, Laguna Art Museum, Clymer Museum in Washington and the Desert Caballeros Museum in Arizona. Her bibliography: Thirty Years of Plein Air Painting, The Art of Jean Perry Following Big Footsteps, Italy, Plein Air Magazine, 2013 Artist Profile and front cover, Plein Air Magazine, 2013 Enchanted Isle, A History of Plein Air Painting In Santa Catalina Island Oil Painting Basics, The Artists’ Magazine Staging A Landscape, Jean Perry The Artists’ Magazine Hitting Her Stride, Nancy Ellis Art of the West Jean Perry, Artist, Nancy Jarchow Steamboat Magazine Jean Perry Meets Goals, Jane Hume Northwest Colorado Press

Summer classes continued until college where she majored in Fine arts at the University of Colorado. It was during this time that she began painting in an abstract, nonobjective style. Jean continued sporadic lessons through the early years of marriage and raising four children. In 1980 Jean and her husband, Gil moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and she decided to make a full-time commitment to her love of art. AMY LAUGESEN, WILDLIFE, Bronze, Raku, Stone, Sculpture, wildlife, horse, unique, public art, nature, found object, integrated, placemaking, wall mounted, narrative, Pegasus, rabbit rabbit,
Wildlife sculpture by AMY LAUGESEN available at Columbine Gallery home of the National Sculptors' Guild Colorado's Largest Fine Art Source Specialists in Public Art
Laugesen’s fragmented animal abstracts create a statement housed in both an ancient and contemporary context. She has successfully taken on the ambitious task to capture and translate the delicate beauty of the raku-fired ceramics into monumental forms.
“The horse is a magnificent creature, historic icon and my longtime muse. To unearth the form of the horse within clay is to recognize the enduring nature of this powerful, beautiful animal and its importance in the history of our civilization. This process of discovering the essence of a horse within the “mud” and transforming this into contemporary ceramic artworks remains my great joy and artistic passion.”
Amy Laugesen is a Colorado native. Examples of her work can be found in various private and public collections around the country.
“The intention of my work is to capture the essence of spirit, movement, and timeless story in the sculptural forms I create. The Horse, as form and function, is a reoccurring theme in my mixed media sculptures and large-scale commissioned public artworks. Often the sculptures appear broken or weathered like objects of antiquity. Smaller works are ceramic and the unique colors are achieved through the unpredictable nature of the Raku reduction firing process. For me, the Raku technique brings the artworks to life.”

Painting by DANIEL AUGENSTEIN available at Columbine Gallery Colorado's Largest Fine Art Source Specialists in Public Art and Home Decor
With subject matter and media as varied as his experiences he was deeply impacted by the 10 months that he lived in Tuscany, Italy. Dan favors classic shapes and moody landscapes. The light of New Mexico and the southwestern region reminiscent of Italy also enters into his motifs.
“I remember drawing as a four year-old. Licking the tip of the red color pencil made a more intense red as I drew my tree! In seventh grade, I was given a set of oil paints for a Christmas present. My mom showed me what she had learned about painting a still life in an evening class. In 1973 and 1974, while an art student at the University of Northern Colorado, I had the chance to study in Florence, Italy for 10 months. That influence changed my life in many ways. Following graduation, I began teaching art in the public school. From drawing, to printmaking, to ceramics, to painting, my experiences broadened and I fell "head over heels" infatuated with mark making. I have found that my brushes and pencils create the same endless variety of marks just as the world surrounding me displays an endless variety of life. I find whimsical lines of energy in my paintings begin to imitate the energy that I sense around me. I have fallen in love with my brush! My subject matter and media reflect over forty years of sharing a wide range of artistic adventures with my students in public school and at the college where I currently teach. Every new medium still represents another possible right answer to some yet unanswered query and another journey to some adventure.“ -Dan Augenstein

Abstract sculpture by JOE NORMAN available at Columbine Gallery home of the National Sculptors' Guild Colorado's Largest Fine Art Source Specialists in Public Art
I enjoy honest welds and allen head bolts, the joy of struggle and walnut oil on smooth sanded wood. My best work has regret and relief and sometimes I throw wrenches.
I steal natural shapes for my sculpture. Animal bones and river stones feel familiar in my gut. They’re all over the place, and they’re beautiful.
I take emotional resonance and apply it to beautiful shapes. The right emotion AND the right shape just might be powerful to the right person. Maybe it is a small example of how to practice BOTH AND in addition to EITHER OR.
My intent is to make art that contributes to a wider conversation about justice and care and our impact on the world. I hope it helps people think and be happy; I hope it helps people be important to each other.
-- Joe Norman, 2018
When you support my artwork, be proud that it helps fund my continued investment in the Human Rights Campaign and the National Park Service.
Joe Norman graduated with a degree in engineering from Stanford University prior to careers in product design consulting, education, and fine art. His furniture and sculpture explore environments that support and promote communities. Many of his designs are direct results of working with schools, families, and businesses to develop places that encourage people to work and be together in positive and supportive ways.
Joe believes that gathering places feed the soul of our communities; that it is around our kitchens or with our feet propped up on coffee tables that we have some of our most important conversations. He thinks the most important part of his work isn’t the tables he makes, but rather it is about the people that are sitting around them. In other words, we do not need more stuff in our lives that does not bring us together in community.
Joe’s furniture is made with recycled and environmentally conscious processes and materials whenever possible; he considers the earth itself as an important member of our global community. In fact, many of his ideas in were born from wrecking yards, recycling centers, and retired bicycles. His machine shop is powered by renewable wind energy.

Oil painting by GARY MILLER available at Columbine Gallery Colorado's Largest Fine Art Source Specialists in Public Art and Home Decor
Being an admirer of Mother Nature, Gary is inspired by the roaring waterfalls, bugling elk, and mountain vistas that have surrounded him most of his life. Primarily an oil painter; his landscapes and wildlife paintings reflect this appreciation.
Gary Miller was born in Oklahoma, but moved to Pueblo, Colorado at an early age. As a child, Gary found immense pleasure in painting and drawing. What started as a recreational activity soon blossomed into a lifelong passion. Gary worked with Union Pacific Railroad after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Colorado State College in 1972 (now Colorado State University – Pueblo). He retired from the railroad in 2010 and began painting full time. In 1987, the Colorado Cattleman’s Association magazine, “The Cattle Guard”, featured Gary’s painting on its cover. Over the years he has been widely collected and has shown in galleries throughout Colorado; as well as Taos, New Mexico; Oklahoma; Kansas; and Wyoming. One of Gary’s painting is displayed in the visitor center of the Japanese sister city to Abilene, Kansas. He now resides in the mountains west of Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife, Tammie, in a home they built together.
