ABOUT THE ARTIST: Brian Archibald, 1952-1995

Stone sculptor Brian Archibald lived and worked in Estes Park, Colorado at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park so as to be near the inspiration for his wildlife pieces. He also traveled extensively to observe wildlife, including 1500 miles of Kenya.

A native of Minnesota, Brian moved to Colorado in 1991, one of the reasons being proximity to a source of marble, his favorite media. Intrigued by the shape, feel, color and patterns of alabaster and marble, Brian was motivated by the challenge of capturing life in an inanimate media.

It was at a marble workshop in Colorado taught by Gerald Balciar and Allan Houser that Archibald first tried sculpting in stone. The excitement of working in marble propelled him to move to Colorado to follow his dream of being a professional sculptor.

Intrigued by the shape, feel, color and patterns of alabaster and marble, Archibald said, "I fell in love with stone. The contours and feeling of highly polished stone moved me and challenged me to bring wildlife to life in it."

Archibald's marble and alabaster sculptures were selected to be included in many major art shows including the Colorado Governor's Invitational from 1993 to 1995; "Sculpture in the Park" from 1992 to 1995 and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum's "Birds in Art" exhibit with both wood and stone sculptures in 1991 and l992. A member of the Society of Animal Artists, Archibald was represented by galleries throughout the west.

"There are things a person can create that never existed until they came along. If it hadn't been for them using their knowledge and energy to turn a specific medium into a creative shape, that shape would never have existed.... That creative energy will live beyond them." - Brian Archibald
