Respect for Grandfather
"Respect for Grandfather" by Denny Haskew
Figurative Bronze, 22x14x14" ed/26
Native American Bust
"In Grandfather’s dream we were free to sing, to dance.
Way up North near the mountains hawks circled above then down and danced with me.
Honor beats were pounding in the song,
Grandfather’s words saw Hawk wings high on my shoulders as I danced.
Reluctant to wear them at first I said, “Grandfather, these wings are so big and no one else wears such big feathers.”
“In time,” said Grandfather, “they will seem to get smaller.”
It is said that Grandfather would get lonely when a Northern song was in his ears.
It is said that Grandfather would be happy then as he felt my spirit and the spirit of the drum.
Grandfather, it is because of you that I dance." -DH
