These recognizable moments skip over generations, each generation finding recognition with it. The scene is timeless in the human experience, and each takes us to that moment causing us to reflect and evaluate the importance of love, relationship and achievement. The textures of DeDecker's sculpture bespeak her passion, integrity, and honesty. Her practiced and studied craftsmanship coupled with her dedicated respect for others achieves the balance, which makes a hard metal come alive with spirit and soul. This is why her collectors never tire of her work. These are the reasons her peers recognize her as being at the forefront of this century's contemporary sculptors.' - John Kinkade, Executive Director of the National Sculptors' Guild DeDecker began her artistic training as a painter at the University of Northern Colorado, until a professor, noticing her joy in the portrayal of shapes and forms, suggested she try her hand at sculpture. Taking his advice, DeDecker went on to study at Gobelins School of Tapestry in Paris, and in returning to Colorado, spent five years as master craftsman to the notable bronze sculptor George Lundeen. She has also worked with sculptors’ Fritz White, Danny Ostermiller and Kent Ulberg. Terry Kelsey, Forrest Hart and Glenna Goodacre. A member of the National Sculptors’ Guild (1994) and National Sculpture Society (1998), in 2007, she became a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, New York, NY. DeDecker has gone on to receive copious awards, such as the Critics’ Choice Award from the Kimball Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX. Jane DeDecker has been making a major contribution to the world sculpture scene since 1986. Creating over 300 limited-edition original sculptures. She has been published in magazines reaching global circulations, from Art and Antiques to European Home and Gardens. She has been sought out for her artistic integrity by organizations ranging from the National Parks Service to the President of the United States. “My work is a cumulative process made of my life experiences and my desire to sculpt the human form. Each piece tells a story of how it was created-every stroke supporting the narrative. I can see in each of my pieces the evolution of learning and the discovery that takes place when I develop the soul and likeness of my subject. I try to retain in the sculpture the beginning strokes and gestures, because for me they contain the truth of the spirit. The finished piece hopefully reveals my thoughtful study of the subject and the energy of the creative process.” -Jane DeDecker, NSG Fellow Jane DeDecker has been making a major contribution to the world sculpture scene since 1986. Creating over 350 limited edition, original sculptures, 90 of those being life-size and 20 one-of-a-kind monuments, with multiple sold-out editions. She has been published in magazines reaching global circulations, from USA Today to Forbes Magazine. Jane DeDecker has hit her stride in honoring the historical significance of women’s achievements through sculptural form. Throughout her career, she has commemorated the accomplishments of over 35 trailblazers like Amelia Earhart, Emily Dickenson, Harriett Tubman, Ida B. Wells, Alice Paul, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Hellen Keller, and Laura Cornelius Kellogg--this list just scratches the surface of the league of women she has brought into her life and her studio. These women were there to bear witness and bear the burden of discrimination and doubt in their abilities because of their gender. Against insurmountable odds, these champions accomplished groundbreaking achievements. In 2021 Jane had over 15 sculptures of sentinel women (in various stages of completion) gracing her studio. And there is always room for more. Cities and special interest groups across the nation have been commissioning Jane to capture and honor their local unsung heroine and icons. Until now, many of these women were merely forgotten and rarely mentioned but in footnotes. DeDecker’s latest commission debut is an homage to 4 giants in the civil rights movement titled “Ripples of Change” for Seneca Falls, NY. As described by Jane “Each of these women has their own individual connection to Seneca Falls as well as their unified dedication to women’s suffrage... “Each answers their own call to effect change, and yet their individual efforts merge into a coalesced movement that promotes, honors and expands the rights of women.” Her accolades in this category have led her to help pass a bill (HR-473) through the US Congress and Senate to have a monument placed in Washington DC that honors the women who fought for and eventually passed the 19th Amendment. Claggett/Rey Gallery is proud to represent Jane’s collection of historic women and if your community is ready to tell the story of a local legend, we can help you make that story come to fruition. Jane DeDecker has been sculpting the human figure for over thirty-five years. She seeks to capture moments that reveal truths about the human condition, that, when stripped down to their essence, are understood intrinsically. As a figurative sculptor, she communicates emotional experience through lyrical compositions that move the viewer. DeDecker’s sculptures stop life in mid-sentence – somewhere between inhaling and exhaling – and gives it form. She tells a story through the simple moments that imprint our lives and define us. DeDecker was born in Marengo, Iowa in 1961. She grew up with nine sisters and brothers on a family farm, and her art work reflects a connection to nature, both the environment and human nature. As DeDecker works the clay, concepts emerge from memories and observations of life. Impressions of something felt, seen, or heard take three-dimensional form. A family rising with the dawn becomes a spiritual awakening. A woman worn thin by her burdens opens the possibility of a lightness of being. A man managing a wheelbarrow reminds us of the steadfast patience to balance life’s abundance.
