Congratulations to Columbine's Daniel Augenstein whose painting is featured in the April Southwest Art Magazine story on the Colorado Governor's Art Show & Sale
As the only show in Colorado that features both established and emerging artists based in the state, the Governor’s Art Show kicks off on Friday, April 28, at the Loveland Museum/Gallery. It’s more than just the finest Colorado painters and sculptors coming together in one exhibition—there are also live music performances, flash mobs, opera singers, a plein-air festival, bagpipers, and more. The Governor’s Art Show is celebrating its 26th year thanks to sponsorship from the Loveland and Thompson Valley Rotary Clubs, with net proceeds from the exhibition going to local youth and community organizations. John Kinkade, a co-chair of the annual show, says the mission of the event is twofold: “We aim to support our local community in need while also introducing Colorado residents to their artists,” he says. “We have so much artistic talent in our state to share.”
The festivities begin on Friday, April 28, with an opening gala and sale from 5 to 9 p.m. preceding the public opening on Saturday, April 29. Other highlights include Saturday artisan exhibits on May 6, 13, and 27 and a plein-air festival and auction throughout downtown Loveland on May 20. Kinkade says the aim is to make the whole event “festive, fun, and participatory.” This year’s show features artwork in every kind of style, from traditional western themes to abstract ideas. There’s something for everyone, as each artist is invited to bring four pieces to the exhibition, totaling more than 230 works on view. And while there are many notable returning and established exhibitors, exactly 50 percent of the participants are new to the event—due, in part, to a blind jury made up of new committee members each year. The show bestows 10 awards of merit and a Best of Show award. Among the 300 artists who submitted work to be juried, Sabrina Stiles, Nancy Wylie, Pem Dunn, and Richard Schilling are just a few of the 55 artists selected. Mark Andrew Bailey, Karen Storm, Lora Witt, and Don Hamilton, all of whom won individual awards of merit last year, are returning. Noteworthy artists Alyson Kinkade and Jane DeDecker collaborated on a piece last year that was named Best of Show in a unanimous vote for a sculpture for the first time ever. They’ll both be returning as well. Finally, James Biggers, an Estes Park-based artist, has participated in the event every year since its inception—and this year will be no different for the landscape painter. This is Jane Hunt’s first time participating in the Governor’s Art Show. The Denver-based impressionist submitted her oil COLORADO SUMMER, choosing to focus on the dramatic sunset while minimizing the majesty of the mountains in the background. “There’s a lot of artists in the event that I admire,” Hunt says. “It will be nice to get together with Colorado artists and share that connection.” —Katie Askew This story was featured in the April 2017 issue of Southwest Art magazine. We have a fun followup to our November post: Pueblo Chile Mural painted by Teresa Vito. Her winning Logo is on its way to becoming a Colorado License Plate...the logo image was taken from Vito's oil painting that was specifically commissioned by the Pueblo Chile Growers Association for the purpose of a brand logo. The highly successful painting was done by Teresa Vito, who lives in Pueblo. Vito spoke with Colorado Matters host Nathan Heffel on Colorado Public Radio last Tuesday about the proposed Pueblo Chile License Plate. She admits, she was taken aback by a couple of the questions, especially when asked about Chile recipes. But like her paintings, she nailed it. listen here CPR's Shanna Lewis writes... "Longtime Pueblo oil painter Teresa Vito never thought she'd see her artwork on cars cruising Interstate 25. But that could be a reality soon, if a new special license plate featuring Pueblo Chiles is approved by the state legislature this session. Last year, Vito was asked by the Pueblo Chile Growers Association to create artwork that could be used to promote Pueblo Chiles, also known as Mirasol Chiles. She painted two pieces: a rural landscape and a detail showing the chiles close up. "I saw the label as a symbol of place -- Pueblo," Vito said, adding the association wanted something that would look like an old fashioned label from the 1920s or 30s for preserves and other produce. Those labels often featured rural landscapes and whatever produce was inside. However, following a conversation between State Representative Daneya Esgar and Pueblo County Commissioner Buffie McFadyen, Vito's work went to another level. After collecting at least 3,000 signatures to prove citizen support, Esgar introduced a bill to the legislature -- it's currently under consideration in the State House of Representatives." .... listen to the CPR interview, and more Representative Daneya Esgar presented the Pueblo Chile license plate bill at the State Capitol Thurs. Feb. 2. The bill passed through the House Transportation committee and moves onto House Appropriations before being considered on the house floor. Stay updated Dan Ostermiller's #bronze #rabbit R.B. She completed the "Pueblo Chile" mural yesterday, and it could not be cooler to see a Vito painting this large. We're sharing some of her images of the progression, see it in person at 1st and Grand in Pueblo, CO. Teresa Vito's intent was to maintain a 1930's sign painting aesthetic. She nailed it. The Pueblo Chile logo painting was part of the group's branding campaign made possible largely due to a United States Department of Agriculture Specialty Crops Block Grant from the Colorado Department of Agriculture. The grant was obtained by Pueblo County’s Economic Development and GIS Department. Chris Markuson, Pueblo County’s Director of Economic Development & GIS helped make the mural placement possible.
"...the logo image was taken from an oil painting that was specifically commissioned by the Pueblo Chile Growers Association for the purpose of a brand logo. The highly successful painting was done by Teresa Vito, who lives in Pueblo. This painting portrays actual chile farms on the St. Charles Mesa. The artist’s excellent paintings often reflect scenes of Pueblo." --learn more about Teresa's logo painting that inspired this mural in the September 5, 2015 feature by Ryan Severance in the Pueblo Chieftain. The Pueblo Chile mural is now featured on the 1860's building at 1st (Central City Drive) and Grand which houses the Pueblo Art Alliance. Vito left a bit of history, keeping the character Fred (from Fred's Wallpaper and Paint Supply) but did add a bit of paint to his brush to tie him into the new mural. Teresa did not paint this mural in a typical manner, rather she painted as she would work on her traditional oil on linen pieces. Only the scale was magnified. Her next largest painting has measured just 48-in x 60-in comparison to this 12-ft x 30-ft mural. She did enlist help from Greg Zimmerman and Mike Strescino. The trio painted the mural in just 9 days. Vito is thrilled to be part of the place she calls home. Pueblo, after-all, is no stranger to murals; home of the largest mural in the world, according to the Guinness World Records, located on a levee along the Arkansas river. She is proud to leave her mark on this artful city. If you wish to commission Teresa to paint in your town, just contact us! As always, you may view and purchase her paintings using Columbine Gallery's online store or visit the gallery and sculpture garden in Loveland, Colorado. We are pleased to share that National Sculptors' Guild Associate Dan Glanz's Tree Top Stretch bronze monument was one of the select new additions to Loveland's Benson Sculpture Garden this year. The park continues to grow each year through the proceeds generated from each annual Sculpture in the Park show now housing over 150 sculptures. We urge you to experience all of Loveland's Public Art collection during your next visit to Columbine Gallery. "For many years we lived in the beautiful Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir forest outside Loveland, Colorado, surrounded by wildlife we would see on an almost daily basis. We were always excited to see the wildlife; deer, black bears, elk, bobcats, coyotes, wild turkeys, and many more animals. However, it was the elusive mountain lion, while only occasionally spotted on the mountain, we knew was always close by. On many occasions, we found tracks in the snow at the edge of the trees and half-eaten prey on our walks around our ridgetop. I would make it a habit, especially in winter, to go out in the early morning darkness to see if there were four-legged visitors nearby before letting our dogs outside. One snowy morning, with my headlamp illuminating the darkness, I discovered fresh mountain lion tracks in the snow on our steep drive only to realize that less snow had fallen in the lion’s tracks in front of me than the track I made behind me just 3 minutes earlier. I followed them back toward the house and discovered the lion had been watching me not 50 feet away. I’m sure it wasn’t the first time, nor the last, we had been closely watched. “Tree Top Stretch” began as a commissioned piece that gave me the opportunity to describe the powerful stealthy, yet reclusive, feline in a more relaxed manner. The big cat is beginning the evening’s hunt, limbering up on an old treetop, more than likely a daily ritual." -Daniel Glanz The National Sculptors' Guild sculpture garden at Columbine Gallery is starting to emerge from the snow cover with colorful blossoms.
Introducing Colorado to its Artistic Talent" - April 24 - May 29, 2016 at the Loveland Museum/Gallery. Opening Night Gala: April 23. Over the past 6 months JK Designs' Principal, John Kinkade, has been pouring much of his knowledge, time and energy into the upcoming 25th Annual Governor's Art Show Happily we are seeing great acknowledgements as the events are beginning to unfold including the opening of Re-Fine-d Gallery this Friday. We believe the art community (artists and collectors alike) will love the show and all the extras that the Board Members have planned.... Beyond the Calendar of Events there will also be artists demonstrations at varied locations each weekend for the duration of the show. Columbine's Alyson Kinkade will be painting April 30th 2-4pm at Studio Vino, Carolyn Barlock at re-Fine-d Gallery May 7th 9-5 and Guest demonstrators Sabrina Stiles and Rodgers Naylor will be at Columbine Gallery May 14th 2-4pm. “This event is not only an opportunity for Colorado artists to show their work,” says board member John Kinkade, “but also to introduce Coloradans to the amazing portfolios of many artistic talents we have in our state.” Indeed, this year’s show features works in a variety of media by 55 artists exploring myriad themes. More than 300 artists submitted work to the juried show, and while there are many returning and established exhibitors, nearly 25 percent of the participants are new to the event. --- To mark the silver anniversary, the show includes an exhibit honoring its “legacy” artists. “This show has been instrumental in introducing new Colorado talent early in their careers,” Kinkade says. “We’re bringing these artists back to the show through the legacy program.” Works owned by the City of Loveland from each of this year’s legacy artists—Fritz White, Kim English, and Quang Ho—are on display in the museum’s Green Room. English and Ho also bring new works available for purchase. ---Proceeds from the show benefit a number of causes and groups supported by two local Rotary clubs. They also have helped to establish art scholarships for area students. click below to read the full Southwest Art article, Columbine Artists in this years exhibit:
